In addition to his work in theatre, Derek has also played percussion in a variety of bands, most notably the 3rd Stream Contemporary Music Quartet: Rachaka.

Rachaka provided a stimulating and exciting live performance stage in which experimentation was encouraged, to the extent of all the musicians swapping instruments whilst maintaining their trademark asynchronous haunting melodies.

In a more traditional medium, Derek has provided session tracks for a variety of pop and rock bands and has contributed to the rhythm section at many a celeidh and wedding.

Derek employs an assortment of world percussion from ghatam to sansa harp in addition to his main setup of acoustic drum kit based around phantoms and roto toms or the flexible and powerful Roland V-8 electronic drum kit.
